
According to the study from Caring.com, reported fraud against individuals 60 or older in North Carolina went from 24.6 per 100,000 residents in 2021 to 45.9 per 100,000 residents in 2024, an 86.77% increase.
The three states with higher increases of fraud against seniors during this three-year period, according to the study, were Indiana with a 240.27% increase, Arizona with a 102.61% increase, and Oklahoma with a 96.46% increase.
North Carolina has the highest increase of senior fraud crimes in the Southeast, according to the study.
The study found seniors across the country lost a total of $4.8 billion to fraud in 2024. Seniors fall victim to fraud more than any other age group, with tech support scams being the most common.
