LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) — Sept. 19 marks one year since the deadly shooting of a Kentucky judge put a small community in the national spotlight.

Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines is accused of shooting and killing Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers.

Stines was arrested and charged with killing a public official after turning himself in.

In March, the defense told the court that Stines intended to use an insanity defense and utilize expert evidence.

Court filings showed that prosecutors are seeking to have the trial moved to another county, claiming that Letcher County residents had to vote for both Stines and Mullins at some point in time.
