CHICAGO (WGN) — A suspect was hospitalized after Chicago police say he was shot by an off-duty suburban police officer following an alleged armed confrontation on the city’s South Side overnight.

A suspect was hospitalized overnight following an alleged armed confrontation involving an off-duty suburban police officer on the city’s South Side.

According to the Chicago police, the incident unfolded just after 9 p.m. in the 7300 block of South Langley Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing.

Officers say the victim, a 64-year-old off-duty police officer from the Broadview Police Department, was approached by a man who was allegedly armed with a knife as he got out of his car, which he had parked in an alley in the area.

After spotting the suspect, the victim pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the suspect in the legs.

Police said the suspect fled the scene following the shooting, but officers caught up with him a short while later and took him into custody.

The suspect was then taken to the hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

A knife was later recovered on the scene, officers said.

According to police, Investigative Response Team Detectives are now investigating the circumstances of the incident, and charges against the suspect are pending.
