Knapp, who had served as director since 2022, was removed from his position following a board vote yesterday. According to the board’s chair, the decision to remove Knapp was driven by a desire for new leadership.
“The South Carolina State Election Commission voted today to remove Howard Knapp as Executive Director, effective immediately, expressing a desire for new leadership,” Chairman Dennis W. Shedd said. “The decision was unrelated to the conduct of any election in South Carolina.”
Jenny Wooten, the commission’s chief of staff, has been appointed as the interim executive director.
The board’s decision marks a change in leadership for the South Carolina Election Commission, which oversees the administration of elections in the state.
