Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wants to legalize and tax recreational marijuana, but most republicans say no. But what about hemp products? Hemp products are in a legal gray area, and a Midstate business is caught up in the uncertainty.
Hemp is similar to cannabis. It has THC, which is responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effects, and it has CBD, which has healthful qualities. In the 2018 Farm Bill, the feds decided that hemp and up to 0.3% THC in products are legal.
Jake Sitler, one of the owners and creators of Endo Cafe in Lancaster County, was injured while cycling. Sitler was able to find relief from CBD products and started creating CBD beverages. He started with coffee and moved to sparkling water. His products have since caught on.
Today, Sitler’s products are sold in 15 states and at his shop. Still, his products aren’t widely distributed in Pennsylvania because state police consider them to be illegal. However, the attorney general’s office says the feds say it’s okay.
State lawmakers, while also wrestling with the broader marijuana issue, also want regulations around hemp products like this.
Sitler said he does too, as long as it’s not so restrictive that it puts him out of business or helps the big multi-state marijuana companies elbow him out. Sitler’s products are currently manufactured in Maryland, but the York native aims to establish a facility here legally.
