Mississippi business owner hosts fundraiser for Delta State student’s family

GRENADA, Miss. — A Grenada, Miss., business owner is hosting a fundraiser for the family of “Trey” Reed, who was found dead Monday hanging from a tree.

The investigation into the death of 21-year-old “Trey” Reed after he was found continues as his family and the public await findings from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s office.

An ice cream truck business owner is raising money for “Trey” Reed’s family.

Word spread like wildfire about Lottie Dottie’s Ice Cream Truck in Grenada and owner Madison Mallett’s fundraising efforts for the family of Trey Reed.

“When I talked to his sister I told her I’m going to sit out here until seven o’clock and even if I just get fifty cents you’re getting it,” said Mallett.

Mallett, like so many others in Trey Reed’s hometown, was devastated by the news that the Delta State University freshman was found dead hanging from a tree on campus.

“I just came up with the idea to do this fundraiser and give the proceeds to his family to help with this tough time they’re going through right now,” said Mallett.

All proceeds from Thursday are going to the Reed family.

“I think that’s great. This is what we’re talking about, having a “service heart.” This young lady has a “service heart,” and she’s not right now thinking about herself. She’s thinking about healing those in need in our community, and I wish more people in the community would do just that,” said Mayor Charles Latham of Grenada, Miss.

On Tuesday, a Bolivar County coroner determined there was no evidence of foul play in Reed’s death.

“Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault,” the coroner’s office said in a statement.

During a news conference, law enforcement says the autopsy on Reed began Wednesday morning and should take 24 to 48 hours to complete. However, he did not have a timeline for when Reed’s family would be able to perform an independent autopsy.

Law enforcement also says there is video footage available, but says the Cleveland Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation.

WREG will keep you updated on this developing story as we keep learning more information surrounding Reed’s death.
