How to keep your fuzzy friends safe and healthy this fall

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) is sharing the best tips to keep pets safe and healthy this fall.

Patrick Theobald, Community Program Manager for BFAS in Salt Lake City, said that one of the biggest concerns with pets in the fall is items falling off of trees. Those can include leaves, acorns, and nuts.

“Acorns can cause blockages or upset stomachs,” Theobald said. “If a dog gets obsessed with eating leaves, it can cause some intestinal issues as well.”

It is important to keep a close eye on pets when they are outside to make sure that they are not getting into things that they should not be.

Theobald also said that with the days getting shorter, it is good to know where pets are at all times.

Additionally, football tailgates and gatherings are common during the fall. Theobald said to keep human food from these events away from pets. Rich and flavorful foods, and alcoholic beverages, can cause stomach issues.

“Human foods are for your humans, and pet foods are for your pets,” Theobald said.

Adoption fees waived

For those looking to adopt a furry friend this fall, BFAS’s partner, Blue Buffalo, is covering all adoption fees and providing a free bag of food and treats for the month of Sept.

The Best Friends Pet Lifesaving Center in Sugar House is located at 2005 S 1100 E and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
