“I am looking forward to learning about drones because I don’t know much about it,” said 16-year-old Robyn Wood.
Wood is one of several high school students in Laurel who will participate in the drone program.
“I was very excited when I saw this program because it will be good for STEM careers and applying for colleges on my resume,” Wood said.
Mayor Keith Sydnor says the City of Laurel is teaming up with New Jersey company Alpha Drone USA, which will provide drones and expertise for the program. It offers students ages 16 to 18 the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with drones.
“I am excited about it because the workforce is turning to AI and as an elected official, it is our responsibility to prepare the next generation for jobs,” Sydnor said.
Alpha Drones USA Chief Revenue Officer Walter Kirkland says he is proud to be a part of the project to help students learn about drones. He says students can learn about aviation regulations and earn their FAA certifications.
“This means lots to me personally because this is the next generation, it is creating a plan for this generation, and it is cool. You look in their eyes and they get excited about it,” Kirkland said.
The student drone program is a 10-week project that gets underway in October.
