The Boone County Health Department and the Boone County Hunger Coalition organized the event to gather personal experiences and insights from attendees about living in poverty. The session aimed to identify community needs and explore potential new services and programs to address these issues.
“It’s important for the community at large to understand that people are coming from all different walks of life,” said Amanda Mehl, public health administrator at the Boone County Health Department and chair of the Boone County Hunger Coalition.
Attendees at the listening session were encouraged to share their personal experiences or those of people they know who have faced poverty and food insecurity. The event provided a platform for community members to voice their challenges and suggest potential solutions.
Mehl explained that the session was part of a broader effort to gather both quantitative and qualitative data to better understand the community’s needs. “We can look at numbers, but we can also look at qualitative data, which means stories, experiences, interviews, feedback,” she said.
The Boone County Hunger Coalition is actively seeking new members and volunteers to participate in its efforts to combat food insecurity. Interested individuals can contact the Boone County Health Department for more information on how to get involved.
The insights gathered from the listening session will be compiled into a report to inform local boards and community leaders, aiming to foster a more supportive environment for those struggling with poverty. “We have neighbors in this community that don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” Mehl emphasized, highlighting the importance of community involvement in addressing these issues.
