Alleged knife-wielding suspect shot by police on West Side overnight

CHICAGO (WGN) — An investigation by Chicago’s Office of Police Accountability is underway on Thursday morning after officers opened fire on an alleged knife-wielding suspect on the city’s West Side overnight.

According to police, the incident unfolded around 11 p.m. Wednesday, in the 5200 block of West Madison Street, in Austin.

Police say the incident began after officers in the area spotted a male offender who was allegedly carrying a large knife while “advancing toward civilians.”

Officers instructed the suspect to drop the weapon, but when he allegedly continued walking toward officers, they deployed their tasers, which proved ineffective.

Authorities say as the suspect allegedly continued to make his way toward the officers, one of them opened fire, eventually striking him.

Following the shooting, the officers on the scene quickly began rendering aid to the suspect, who was later taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Currently, it is unclear what led to the incident and CPD’s Investigative Response Team and COPA are now investigating.
