SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Two Utah residents are facing federal drug charges after approximately 100,000 fentanyl pills were seized by law enforcement while executing a search warrant in West Valley City earlier this month.
Andrew Estefan Valle Acosta, 19, and Elvin Isaac Vega Zuniga, 19, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City, charging them with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute.
Their initial court appearance is scheduled for September 19. The case was investigated by the FBI and the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force (DMNSF).
According to court documents, beginning in May 2025, agents working with the FBI and DMNSF were investigating a drug trafficking organization. Through controlled purchases of fentanyl, agents identified a home in West Valley City that was being used to distribute fentanyl.
Agents conducted a search warrant of the home on September 2, and Vega Zuniga and Valle Acosta were in the residence. They were both arrested. Agents discovered approximately 9,700 grams of fentanyl pills (approximately 97,000 individual pills) that field-tested positive for fentanyl.
Allegedly, Vega Zuniga and Valle Acosta both admitted to delivering fentanyl on behalf of and being paid weekly by the drug trafficking organization.
According to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office District of Utah, Vega Zuniga is undocumented and does not have legal residency. Vega Zuniga was given a notification to appear in his immigration case by ICE in 2023, and proceedings to remove him from the country have been pending since.
