Sandy schools implement secure status due to nearby police activity
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on September 17, Sandy Police Department was dispatched to the area of 500 east and 8800 south due to calls of a burglary in progress. When they responded to the scene, they found that it was a trespassing issue, instead.
While law enforcement was investigating the trespassing, Sandy Elementary was placed on ‘Secure’ status as a precaution. Under ‘secure’ status, all students are taken indoors, and all exterior doors are locked.
Additionally, Canyons School District reportedly sent an alert to the parents of Mt. Jordan Middle School parents. That alert said that Mt. Jordan would be on a controlled release, with any walking students being held on campus until they got an “all clear”.

Bus riders and students who are picked up from school were released on their normal schedule. Later, at 2:32 p.m., Mount Jordan Middle School sent another alert saying that law enforcement gave the ‘all clear’ and that all students were safely released.
According to Sandy Police Department (SPD), Sandy Elementary School lifted ‘secure’ status at 2:40 p.m.
SPD also announced that they took one female into custody and that there is still one male outstanding. However, SPD believes that they know who the male suspect is.
Reportedly, no weapons were involved.
