Mississippi city reconsiders renaming street for Charlie Kirk

HERNANDO, Miss. — The Hernando Board of Aldermen took up a proposal Tuesday night to rename a city street after slain political activist and commentator Charlie Kirk.

The first vote to rename a city street after Charlie Kirk failed; a second motion to deny the proposal altogether failed.

A third motion to table the vote altogether also failed, and with no further motions, the board moved on to the next item.

Residents are still divided over the proposal.

“I find it offensive that in this country, a person was assassinated for their political beliefs,” said John Williams, for renaming the street after Charlie Kirk.

“My concern is not about silencing political voices, but about ensuring our public spaces reflect values that unify us rather than divide us,” said Theresa Morgan, against renaming the street after Charlie Kirk.

Alderman Kit Kitchens made the proposal to rename a city street after Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, a commentator and co-founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was killed during a visit to a campus in Utah.

“I move that the Board of Aldermen rename the following roadways within the City of Hernando. The portion of Green T Road west of– that begins at Old Highway 51 South and extends and turns into Green T Road eastward until it meets McGinvale Road,” said Alderman Kitchens.

Alderman Kitchens changed his request during the meeting, acknowledging the debate over placing Charlie Kirk Boulevard on the same street as Hernando High School.

“For me as a Black woman, listening to some of the rhetoric that this young man used while he was living it’s offensive,” said one woman.

“The reality is most of the disparaging things were things that were taken out of context from longer form things that he said and realistically didn’t hold to who he was or his policies,” said Kitchens.

“The truth is, I believe Charlie Kirk was an incredible patriot, I think he was a good Christian, and I don’t believe that using personal character judgments is the way we need to be going about this,” said a Hernando High student.

“If we are going to honor a man, if we’re going to honor sacrifice, my suggestion is we start with our own first before we move to the outside,” said another attendee.

What’s next for the proposal to rename a city street here in Hernando after Charlie Kirk is unknown.

With no further motions at the meeting, it means it can be brought up at a later time, which is undetermined at the moment.
