The Minnesota Department of Revenue is asking people to be on alert for scam text messages prompting recipients to share banking information to receive a “refund.”
The texts are posing as the Department of Revenue, the state agency that processes and issues tax refunds.
“Your refund request has been processed and approved,” the scam message begins.
The scheme manufactures a sense of urgency, telling people that not providing their bank information by Sept. 18 “will result in permanent forfeiture of this refund.”
State officials say anyone who receives texts of this nature should avoid clicking on the link in the text, report the message as a scam and delete it. Anyone who followed the link and submitted their information should contact their bank.
“The Minnesota Department of Revenue will never send you unsolicited communications asking you to update your personal or financial information,” the department said.
Anyone expecting a tax refund from the state can check on the status of their refund using this online form.
