Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced that additional law enforcement agencies will assist in “safety efforts” following a shooting that injured seven people on Monday night.
In a message posted on his X account, formerly Twitter, Frey stated that the city of Minneapolis had requested assistance from additional law enforcement agencies to maintain community safety.
After recent violence on Lake Street, we’ve asked law enforcement partners from the County, State, and Metro Transit to join MPD in stepping up safety efforts. Starting today, more officers will be in the area to help keep our community safe. Thanks to our partners for helping!— Mayor Jacob Frey (@MayorFrey) September 17, 2025
In his message, the mayor specifically listed that the decision was made due to the shooting at a Lake Street homeless encampment on Monday night, which left seven people injured.
The encampment was well known to the city of Minneapolis, which had stated that it wanted to close it for months. However, Hamoudi Sabri, the landlord of the land on which the encampment was located, reportedly refused to allow the city to clear it out.

Following the shooting, the city announced it would be clearing the encampment with or without Sabri’s permission.
“As soon as this crime scene has been investigated, we’re shutting this thing down,” Frey said. “If (Sabri) wants to sue us, he can. If he wants to take this up in court, that is certainly his prerogative, but this is not safe, this is a danger to the community, and it’s being shut down right now.”
Sabri, who also spoke on Tuesday, said clearing encampments won’t solve the larger issues the city faces, instead calling for a citywide emergency response.
“Bulldoze people’s tents, fence off their space, and call it leadership,” the landlord Hamoudi Sabri said. “But it isn’t leadership. It’s an illusion of control designed to make the problem less visible, not less deadly.”
As 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS previously reported, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that he’s also talked to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and those agencies have been directing more help to that area of city. The Minnesota State Patrol is also helping with patrols in problem parts of the city.
It’s still unclear how long that assistance might last but O’Hara said he hopes it’s for as long as it’s necessary.
