CMPD officers responded to Albemarle Road just before 1:45 a.m. on September 16 after receiving a call about an assault with a deadly weapon.
When officers arrived, they found a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Novant Health Presbyterian Main, where he died shortly after arrival. A second victim, a woman, was also found nearby with a gunshot wound to the head. She remains in critical condition at Atrium Health Main, according to Mecklenburg County records.
According to court documents, witnesses said they saw a man known by the nickname “El Sobrino” walk up behind the two victims and open fire. The suspect was described as a young Hispanic man with short dark hair, wearing a black hoodie and black pants, fleeing on a red and black bicycle.
Shortly after, detectives found a man matching that description near the crime scene. He was identified as Francisco Aldair Lopez-Tadeo. Though Lopez-Tadeo initially denied involvement, one of the witnesses later confirmed his identity as the person they knew as “El Sobrino.”
Based on witness statements and evidence collected, CMPD detectives charged Lopez-Tadeo with first-degree murder. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday morning, where a judge appointed a public defender and ordered no bond.
This investigation remains active and ongoing.
