Indiana to Host Inaugural National Civility Summit in Carmel

Written from press release

CARMEL, Ind. — Amid deepening national divides, Indiana will take the spotlight later this month as host of the first-ever National Civility Summit, a two-day gathering focused on rebuilding trust and promoting respectful dialogue.

The event, organized by Project Civility and presented by Merchants Bank, will be held Sept. 26–27 in Carmel. It will feature national speakers, workshops, and discussions aimed at helping communities embrace principled disagreement as a tool for growth and common good.

“Civility is not just about politeness and cannot be mistaken for passivity,” said Jeff Worrell, civic leader, entrepreneur, and founder of Project Civility. “It’s a radical effort aimed at creating spaces where people can truly listen, understand, and work together towards a better future.”

The summit opens Friday, Sept. 26, with a welcome reception headlined by former Indiana governor and Purdue University president Mitch Daniels, who will lead a fireside chat. The evening will also include presentation of the inaugural Project Civility National Award.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, author and civic thinker Alexandra Hudson will deliver the keynote address at the Carmel Clay Public Library. Her book, The Soul of Civility, has helped spark a national conversation on bridging divides and directly influenced Worrell to create Project Civility.

Other speakers include John Wood Jr., national ambassador for Braver Angels, and Ken Sande, conflict resolution expert and author of The Peacemaker. The day’s programming will also include collaborative workshops, civility skills training, and interactive sessions on how to create “Civility Cities” across the country.

Founded in Carmel, Project Civility has grown into a national nonprofit promoting civility through education, partnerships, and grassroots efforts. Its goal is to encourage communities nationwide to adopt its framework for constructive engagement and civil discourse.
