Bystander killed in Greenwood shooting; suspect caught in Indianapolis
According to the Greenwood Police Department, the shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Apartments, which is near U.S. 31 and County Line Road.
Officers initially responded to the area after receiving reports of gunshots nearby. They found a 22-year-old who’d been shot. The victim was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified him as Bidan Mburu and ruled his death a homicide. He was not the intended target.
According to police, the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Isiah Q. Peak Jr., had gotten into an altercation with another person at the apartment complex. Peak pulled a gun and shot at the other person. Instead, Mburu was hit. Police described him as an “uninvolved” party.
Peak quickly left the area, police said. Greenwood detectives, working with Indiana State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, tracked him to a room at the Inn Town Suites near I-70 and Post Road on the east side of Indianapolis.
Hours after the shooting, Greenwood SWAT arrived at the location and took Peak into custody without further incident.
He’s being held without bail in the Johnson County Jail on preliminary charges of murder and intimidation with a deadly weapon. He has previous warrants in Greenwood for false identification and operating while never receiving a driver’s license.
The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision. The shooting remains under investigation.
