Voters head to polls with control of Minnesota House at stake in special election for Hortman’s seat

Voters heading to the polls on Tuesday will determine control of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

The special election in District 34B, which represents parts of Brooklyn Park, Champlin and Coon Rapids, will fill the House seat held by the late Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated in June.

Former Brooklyn Park City Council member XP Lee won the DFL special election primary and is up against Republican Ruth Bittner, who’s currently a real estate agent.

Currently, Republicans hold a 67-66 seat edge in the state House, meaning they’ll either extend their lead by a seat if Bittner wins or the chamber will again be tied.

The district has long leaned Democratic, and Hortman won reelection to the seat in November with 63% of the vote.

The winner will serve the remainder of Hortman’s term, which runs through next year.
