Ohio escapees flee to Kentucky, search intensifies in Maysville
According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio, Roy Butler and Jerry Cooper escaped from the Brown County Detention Center between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 15. The pair reportedly damaged a security window before fleeing through the sheriff’s office impound lot.
Ohio authorities noted that Cooper was booked on charges including attempted murder, felonious assault, and having weapons under disability. Butler also faces a weapons under disability charge in addition to drug trafficking.
“If located, do not approach,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
On Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, the Maysville Police Department announced that authorities were on the scene of an “active situation” in the Dover area. Officers were reportedly searching for the missing inmates who were believed to have crossed the Ohio border into Kentucky.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office reported around 10 a.m. that Butler was taken into custody.
“We believe Jerry Cooper is in the Dover area near the Mason Bracken line. Please remain clear of the area if able and report any suspicious activity,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
Maysville police recommend that residents keep doors and windows secured, and if you see anything unusual, report it to local authorities.
The Kentucky Transportation Operations Center issued a notice around 11:50 a.m. that Kentucky Highway 8 in Mason County is blocked due to police activity from the 1.3 to 1.4 mile marker.
