New art space in Little Village celebrates creative youth in Chicago

CHICAGO — In Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, a new art venue is taking shape. The staff that runs Yollocalli Arts Reach has turned an abandoned firehouse into an art space for Chicago youth.

The award-winning youth initiative was created by the National Museum of Mexican Art – a centerpiece of Chicago’s Latino community.

For nearly 30 years, the free arts program has made a difference in the lives of thousands of young students. The new venue will help expand their work.

Vanessa Sanchez is Yollocalli’s Director and explained some of the different art forms they’ll provide for students which include a journalism/radio program.

“Anything from street art to graffiti art.  We are going to have ceramics that we are very excited about,” she said.

The new center at 24th Street and Whipple is expected to be up and running later this month.

If you’d like to support Yollocalli Arts Reach text “ART” to 97999 or visit wgntv.com/familycharities. All proceeds will benefit Yollocalli Arts Reach. The Robert R. McCormick Foundation will match $.50 on the dollar.
