FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — A Michigan man is behind bars after he allegedly stole an interesting piece of machinery from a Fairfax County construction site before selling it online.

It all started on the morning of Aug. 11, when police were called to Chain Bridge and Dulles Toll roads in McLean for an unusual report— a stolen bulldozer.

At the scene, someone told officers that someone took a bulldozer from a construction site under the pretense that it needed maintenance, according to Fairfax County police. Detectives were able to use GPS tracking to trace the stolen bulldozer, which was towed away from the site. Investigators tracked it all the way to Kentucky.

Fairfax County detectives worked with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky to find the lost machinery; however, investigators quickly discovered that someone had purchased the bulldozer from Facebook Marketplace, unaware that it was stolen.

Upon investigating further, police learned that Dushon Sheperd, 34, allegedly stole the bulldozer before selling it on the online platform.

Detectives obtained a warrant for larceny by false pretense and arrested Sheperd in Laurel County. He is waiting to be sent to Fairfax County, where the offense took place.

“A bulldozer? Okay,” Christine Jordan said when she heard about the incident. “The fact that someone was able to leave with it, without anyone confirming. Hey, did someone put it in order to get maintenance done on it? This is shocking to me.”

Investigators urge anyone with information to call the McLean Station at 703-556-7750 and ask to speak with a detective.
