SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 12 million people are victims of domestic violence at the hands of an intimate partner each year.
Project Celebration Inc. (PCI) is a local non-profit organization that provides resources and assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Angela Henderson, the Assistant Executive Director for PCI, says working together is the best way to combat this widespread issue.
“So, it’s a big issue, and it only eradicates when we work together as a community. It’s not just on the police; it’s not just on the advocates. It’s the whole community coming together, once we see something and say something. And you can do it anonymously,” she explains.
She also explains how education about what domestic violence is and the resources available to victims are top priorities for Project Celebration.
“To have educational presentations, to tell — talk to our coworkers, our friends, our family, about what domestic violence is. And tell them about resources that programs have that will help them. Because the objective is to do prevention work, not intervention,” says Henderson.
Sergeant Shawn Poudrier, the Public Information Officer with the Bossier City Police Department, emphasizes the importance of reaching out for help and explains how local police are available to keep victims safe.
“If you’re a victim of domestic violence, don’t be afraid to report it. We’re here, and there’s lots of ways we can protect you,” he says.
Project Celebration offers 24/7 crisis intervention, counseling for domestic violence survivors, legal advocacy, and more. You can find their hotline numbers below:
