Elon University and Queen’s University announced on Tuesday that the two institutions will be merging. While the structure of the merger will be finalized over the next few months, school officials said the vision is to create a new institution in Charlotte that strengthens higher education throughout the region.
“Queens has long been a leader in education, deeply connected to Charlotte’s civic and business community. This merger with Elon accelerates that vision, ensuring continuity while creating bold opportunities to expand our impact,” Jesse Cureton, Acting President and CEO of Queens University, said.
According to Elon, the University will operate Queens at the conclusion of the merger. For Queens, community programs will continue to serve Charlotte, and the location will continue to be a key part of Charlotte’s footprint.
Charlotte’s metro population is projected to grow by 21% between 2020 and 2024, which outpaces North and South Carolina state averages.
Elon University says the combination is both strategic and student-centered.
“At Elon University, innovation means far more than coming up with something new. It’s about our students using and applying discoveries to advance change for the better, and about the relentless pursuit of progress and improvement,” Elon’s President Connie Ledoux Book said.
Carolina Sports Live reached out to the athletic department at Queens to learn what the makeup of the school’s athletics program will be once the merger is complete.
Students, staff, families, and alumni from both institutions are expected to meet over the next several weeks to discuss the merger. By November, the boards are expected to approve the final parameters of the partnership.
