CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officially welcomed Jonathan D. Thomas as the district’s new Chief of Police during a ceremony held on Tuesday.

With over two decades of law enforcement experience, CMS said Chief Thomas steps into the role with a background in leadership and public safety.

Thomas began his career with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police in 1998. Since then, he has served in several positions, including Special Operations and Emergency Management.

Thomas holds a Criminal Justice degree from UNC Charlotte, an MBA from Pfeiffer University, and law enforcement training from the University of Virginia and the FBI National Academy.

In his previous roles, CMS said he led efforts during natural disasters such as Hurricane Helene and helped coordinate security for large-scale national events.

As Chief of Police, CMS said Thomas will oversee school safety initiatives across the district, working closely with staff, students, and local agencies. His appointment comes at a time when school safety continues to be a key concern for many Charlotte-area families.
