OREM, Utah (ABC4) — A Bonneville Elementary School student is in custody after bringing a firearm to school on Monday morning.
Rich Stowell, Director of Communications with Alpine School District, told ABC4.com that school officials found a firearm in a student’s backpack, after another student reported it. The student was immediately detained.
Stowell said that staff was notified by noon, and the entire school community was notified around 1:45 p.m. on Sept. 15.
“The timing of the messages was exactly what our procedures call for. The principal kept everyone informed while maintaining order at the school. In collaboration with the police officers involved, district safety personnel, and school leaders, he determined that the rest of the students were safe,” Stowell said.
In a message to the parents, the school said that the Orem Police Department is heading the investigation and that the student is in custody and no longer on campus.
“In situations like this, we follow strict threat assessment procedures designed to protect our students and staff. These procedures include a thorough review of any potential risks to others. You can learn more about Alpine School District procedures on the Safety and Security webpage.”
The email also emphasized that firearms are strictly prohibited from campus.
“Please remember that bringing a firearm—real or facsimile—to school violates both district policy and state law. We are grateful to the student who spoke up and reported their concern so quickly,” the email said.
Parents with any questions or concerns are asked to contact the school.
