Following a recount on Tuesday, the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections certified Juan Diego “JD” Mazuera Arias as the District 5 Democratic primary winner by 34 votes over incumbent Marjorie Molina. After the Democratic primary last week, Molina trailed by 37; both candidates gained votes in the recount.
Molina was first elected to the post in July 2022 after the 2021 elections were postponed due to COVID. In the previous primary in 2023, Molina won by more than 800 votes, and she was unopposed in the last two general elections.
According to Arias’ Facebook page, he graduated from NYU Graduate School of Public Service in 2024 and works in global government affairs for information technology company Kyndryl.
The race was split on geographic lines in a district with a heavy Hispanic population. Arias won the precincts closest to Eastway Drive, while Molina took those beyond the Eastland area and along the I-485 corridor.
There were no Republicans in this year’s primary. Neither candidate has addressed the results.
