Virginia Golden lost her daughter, Raquel Harris, and her granddaughter, Skylar Tapp, in the fire that tore through Fat Belly’s Diner early Saturday morning.
“She just was a lovely girl,” Golden said. “She was a wonderful mom. She gave Skylar the world. She did anything for her and I’m going to miss her dearly.”
Golden described Skylar as full of life; a little girl who loved to dance and draw, and who always brought joy to those around her.
“She just was a wonderful little girl,” she said. “She really was sweet and everything. Lovable. Oh, my God. She’s kind, lovable, lovable.”
Golden says she learned of the fire while out of town, receiving a call that her daughter and granddaughter were in the hospital only to later learn they had not survived.
“He was like, ‘Ma’am, they were in a fire, and they did not make it.’ I lost it. I fell to the floor. I just lost it because those were my two babies,” Golden said.
Now, she says she’s leaning on her faith and the support of family and friends as she makes plans to bring them home to North Carolina for a proper goodbye.
“It’s hard, but God got me,” she said. “Got me and my family. And I thank all my friends and everybody for whatever they are helping me with. My main concern is I’m just trying to get my babies back to North Carolina so they can have a proper good home going.”
