Charlotte FC secures historic ninth straight win in shut out match against Messi, Inter Miami

CHARLOTTE (CAROLINA SPORTS LIVE) — Charlotte FC returned home to a sold-out crowd as they faced Lionel Messi and Inter Miami Saturday night.

The team (16-2-11) was riding high on an eight-match MLS winning streak with the ability to tie the league record for the longest streak.

Fans say they never would’ve imagined any team in the city would be on such a hot streak at any point. While some people turned out to see soccer superstar Messi, others say they wanted to be in the building to feel the energy, especially if the team extends its streak.

The Crown was without their head coach, Dean Smith, since he’s been suspended due to yellow cards.

In the 32nd minute, Messi would miss a penalty (for the first time since 2022), allowing Charlotte’s goalkeeper, Kahlina, to make a save and deny Miami the chance to take the lead.

Shortly after, forward Idan Toklomati put up the first point of the match with a right-footed shot from the center of the box, with an assist from Kerwin Vargas. The teams went into halftime with Charlotte in the lead.

Coming back from break, Toklomati would widen Charlotte’s lead by another goal at close range, with the assist from Brandt Bronico.

At the 84th minute, Toklomati would convert a penalty, solidifying Charlotte’s lead — and ultimately the team’s ninth straight win. Miami remained scoreless.

“I feel amazing. I cannot explain my feeling right now. After I scored two, we get a penalty, and I look at Wilf and he says ‘you want a hat trick?“ I look back at him, like ‘oh my god, he’s an angel.’ I looked at him like an angel. After I scored the hat trick, I almost lost my mind. It was the best feeling I ever had,” Toklomati said.

The game ends 3-0. Charlotte FC ties the Seattle Sounders for the MLS record for longest streak.
