Music fills the air at Lackawanna Station this Saturday. The 16th Montclair Jazz Festival Jamboree brings ten hours of free music to New Jersey on Sept. 13. Acts start at noon and keep playing until 10 p.m.

Two stages will buzz with sound all day. Star performers include sax wizard Lakecia Benjamin with Phoenix, Christian McBride’s Ursa Major quintet, and vocalist Jose James. Trumpeter Alphonso Horne leads his Gotham Kings through the crowd in true New Orleans style to start the day.

“We want to bring the very best to our neighbors, and to do it without no tickets required. That’s big lift these days,” said Melissa Walker, Jazz House Kids founder and president, according to WBGO.

Master drummer Luisito Quintero brings hot Afro-Latin beats to the main stage. Meanwhile, the Jazz House Collective pays tribute to New Jersey’s own James Moody as this year’s honored artist.

The festival moved from Nishuane Park to its current spot after COVID struck. “Coming out of the pandemic, one of the things we were mindful of is that people really wanted to be on their feet and not sedentary,” Walker said per The North Jersey Record.

Fresh talent takes over the Emerging Musicians Stage as fifty young artists from Jazz House Kids step into the spotlight. These rising stars, aged 14 to 25, show what they’ve got. The Jazz House All-Stars make a quick stop before sailing off to play Caribbean cruises in early 2026.

While last year drew 25,000 music fans, planners think about 20,000 will show up this time around.

Between the beats, visitors can check out 180 craft stands and grab food from local vendors. Art lovers won’t want to miss the Improbable Art Expo. As night falls, DJ Brother Mister and Prince Hakim turn the Downtown Stage into a dance party from 8 to 10.
