BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The City-Parish celebrates another milestone in its MOVEBR infrastructure program with the completion of the Hundred Oaks Avenue Sidewalks Project.
The improvements stretch from Acadian Thruway to Perkins Road, adding new sidewalks and upgraded drainage to one of Baton Rouge’s busiest neighborhood corridors.
Officials say the project is about both safety and accessibility.
“Now they don’t have to walk in the streets; they can walk on the sidewalks along the street,” said Fred Raiford, East Baton Rouge Parish’s Director of Transportation and Drainage.
For longtime residents like Michael Brown, who has lived in Hundred Oaks for more than 40 years, the upgrades couldn’t come soon enough. He says heavy traffic near nearby schools has long been a concern.
“You know, a couple of high schools around here, so in the morning and the afternoon, there’s a lot of vehicle traffic,” Brown said.
Brown added that the new sidewalks are already helping neighbors feel more connected.
“Hopefully, it brings more of them out. I’ve already seen a lot of my neighbors who I’ve never met before because they’re walking on the sidewalk in front of my house.”
In addition to sidewalks, the $500,000 project features drainage upgrades designed to reduce flooding. Raiford explained that the improvements will help direct stormwater into new drain boxes and canals, keeping water off yards and streets.
The Hundred Oaks project marks the 43rd completed MOVEBR initiative, with more work ahead.
Raiford said upcoming plans include constructing sidewalks near the Perkins Road underpass, further expanding safe and walkable access for the community.
