‘When I travel to other countries, this is who they think we are’: VA lawmakers react to Kirk murder

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia lawmakers are reacting to what some are calling the political assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“When I travel to other countries, this is who they think we are,” Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) told reporters. “And it’s harder and harder to make the counterargument to convince anybody that they’re wrong.”

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) said those in positions of power have to be calmer and more measured when debating political issues.

“Fight hard for what we believe in, yes, but don’t go to the point of condemning those we disagree with and somehow questioning their patriotism, their faith,” Warner said.

Meanwhile, at an event in Northern Virginia, Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) called for all Americans to come together.

Warner echoed Youngkin’s comments, adding that we simply need to get to know each other as people, and not as political opponents.

“And today, being the 24th anniversary of 9/11, our country did come together in the aftermath of that tragedy. We’ve got to see if we can rekindle that spirit,” Warner said.

Both of Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates, Republican Winsome Earle-Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger, have condemned the violence as well on social media.
