So Minnesota: Twin Towers steel beam part of Rockville’s 9/11 MemorialSo Minnesota: Twin Towers steel beam part of Rockville’s 9/11 Memorial
Thursday marks the 24th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history.
The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killed nearly 3,000 people.
The town of Rockville, Minnesota, honors the lives lost that day by having a 9/11 Veterans Memorial that includes a steel beam from the Twin Towers.
Rosie Steil wrote to the New York and New Jersey Port Authority requesting a piece of the Twin Towers to honor firefighters and police officers who died that day.
“Our community really came together and wanted this probably as much as I did,” Steil said.
A local trucking firm picked up the steel beam and brought it back to Minnesota free of charge.
“It makes you never want to forget our freedoms and how lucky we are here,” Steil said.
The memorial in Rockville was dedicated in 2016, on the 15th anniversary of the attack.
