Chickenpox case confirmed in Rowan County young adult
The Rowan County Public Health Department is investigating the case and offering support to prevent further spread. Chickenpox is a very contagious virus that causes an itchy, blister-like rash, fever, and fatigue, health officials said.
Chickenpox spreads through the air and by direct contact. One infected person can pass it to 9 or 10 others, they said. Most people who are vaccinated or have had chickenpox before are protected. Those who get sick despite being vaccinated usually have milder symptoms.
Health officials are reminding the public to:
Dr. Darren Kelly, Medical Director for Rowan County Public Health, said, “While chickenpox is often considered a mild childhood illness, its impact in adults can be more serious with complications and higher risk of hospitalization. Prevention through vaccination remains a critical public health strategy to protect vulnerable populations.”
This is the first case of chickenpox in Rowan County since 2022.
