Former Louisiana education department employee pleads guilty to charge in fraud scheme
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A former Louisiana Department of Education employee pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to commit wire fraud charge tied to a scheme to defraud the federal government.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) said Romney Manuel, 51, of Prairieville, was charged in connection with a conspiracy to defraud the federal government through LaCAP grant money from April 2020 to March 2021.

“During the course of said conspiracy, Manuel and his co-conspirator made a non-existent childcare provider appear operational and manipulated spreadsheets and data systems utilized by the Louisiana Department of Education in order to steal $74,250 in federal funds,” the DOJ said in a news release.

Federal officials said Manuel could face up to 30 years in prison and be ordered to pay a $1 million fine.
