The suspect, 28-year-old Terry Franklin, was allegedly involved in a shootout with another person near the 37000 block of Saint Matthew Drive in Newark on May 25, 2021. Police responded but found no suspects at the scene.
Around 9:12 that night, a neighboring police department responded to a car crash and found the driver suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery and has since recovered from the shooting.
“Detectives learned the two exchanged gunfire, during which the injured party was struck,” Newark PD said. “The victim retreated to a vehicle and left the area while Franklin continued firing as the vehicle departed.”
Following the shooting, police issued a warrant for Franklin’s arrest. Franklin was thought to have fled the state and evaded police capture for more than four years.
On Aug. 13, 2025, a Bay Area law enforcement agency arrested Franklin as part of an unrelated investigation. Newark PD took custody of Franklin on Sept. 3 and he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail for attempted murder and other gun charges in connection to the 2021 shooting.
