Xavier University students on edge amidst HBCU threats

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As violent rhetoric builds across the country, college students are concerned about safety.

At Xavier university, no threats were made to their HBCU campus, but some students are still worried.

“We haven’t gotten shut down or kicked out yet, so just like seeing all the threats and seeing how people feel; it’s just a little concerning honestly,” Xavier freshman Kamryn Taylor said.

They say that while five HBCU campuses, including Southern University in Baton Rouge, have already seen threats; they worry their university might be next.

“It’s also concerning because we are on an open campus so I feel like even with a heads up, we really don’t know what could happen,” Xavier freshman Jada Barrow said.

Some HBCU leaders across New Orleans have already taken notice, and shared their thoughts on the violent rhetoric spreading across universities.

Dillard University released a statement regarding safety on campus, saying quote:

“We are prepared to exercise the utmost caution and take all necessary measures to ensure the security of our community during these challenging times.”

As for Xavier students, while the concern is still there, some say the precautions taken by the school have assured them of their safety moving forward.

“We safe around here. We got a lot of campus police and we staying vigilant. They sent out an email today making sure that everyone stays vigilant and stuff like that,” Kaylan Young said.
