Thursday forecast: Plenty of sunshine leads into summer-like weekend in Chicagoland
A summer-like weekend is coming to Chicagoland, and Thursday afternoon will be a beautiful lead-up to it.
We’re looking at a gorgeous late-summer day, with unlimited sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Highs will reach the low 80s inland, but a northeast lake breeze will knock temps down a few degrees for areas closest to Lake Michigan.
Water temps have dipped a bit from peak summer highs, and the breeze off those cooler waters will help knock readings down several degrees, but it will still be a very pleasant day all around Chicagoland.
The warmth continues to build, with nearly 208 million U.S. residents expected to be at or above 80 degrees Thursday afternoon and nearly 73 million at or above 90 degrees.
Shorter days taking are their toll on the amount of sunshine, but you can still get a sunburn in less than 30 minutes without proper protection.
An extended period of above-normal temperatures is on tap, reversing the cool start to the month. Summerlike 80s and 90s return for much of the Midwest for multiple days in a row.
In Chicagoland, Saturday highs could touch 90 in some locations.
Above-normal temperatures are in firm control across the Plains and north into the Prairie Province of Canada.
Above-normal temperature anomalies begin to spread east, including to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S., while some cooler air begins to show up across the spine of the Plains.
A more humid weather regime settles in over the weekend and into early next week. While it will be noticeable, this will be nothing on par with some of the humid spells earlier this summer.
A dry pattern will continue for at least the next week across the Midwest, increasing chances for drought conditions to reappear.
