Man questions 2024 light rail incident following August tragedy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The light rail tragedy has a NoDa man wondering why nothing more happened when he saw a reported robbery and assault happen at a CATS stop in 2024.

Michael Zytkow spoke with Queen City News last year when the incident happened. After hearing of last month’s light rail tragedy, it reminded him of a fight he saw unfold here last July at the Parkwood Station.

“It brought up a lot of memories of what occurred here 14 months ago,” Zytkow said.

He said he was headed to a meeting the morning of July 15 when he heard someone calling for help. Zytkow said he called 911 immediately and tried to de-escalate the situation.

“The perpetrator started attacking the victim and started violently swinging at them,” Zytkow said. “And at that point, that’s when I punched the perpetrator, then fought him and held him and pinned him to the ground until police arrived.”

Zytkow said nothing has happened since. No one reached out, and this most recent tragedy pushed him to ask more questions.

“We have the surveillance footage from this camera right here, like right beside us right now,” Zytkow said. “We know that they have this footage, and they haven’t released it in 14 months.”

We received the police report from the July 2024 incident from Zytkow.

“The victim stated the suspect removed the victim’s cell phone from the victim’s hand and proceeded to exit the train. The victim advised he attempted to regain control of his property and was assaulted by the suspect. The witness observed the assault and detained the suspect until law enforcement officers arrived on scene. The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with Common Law Robbery.”

Queen City News reached out to CMPD for information on the case. We were told the suspect, a man with a lengthy criminal history in Charlotte, was arrested and taken into custody and charges were filed. Those charges do not appear in eCourts.

“I think unfortunately, there’s so many stories like mine that have occurred that have either not been reported or simply brushed aside,” Zytkow said.

He would also like the surveillance video of the incident to be released. We have requested footage from CATS.

More than anything else, Zytkow wants justice in the case and to know why so far nothing has happened.
