In the moments after news broke of the shooting, local leaders in D.C., Maryland and Virginia took to social media to express their hope for Kirk’s recovery.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) condemned the attack, posting on X:
I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on Charlie Kirk this afternoon at Utah Valley University. As I have said in the past and as I will continue to say: Political violence is never acceptable. Ever.
The First Lady and I are praying for him and his family at this time.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin posted a statement on X, writing, “Suzanne and I are praying for Charlie Kirk and his family.”
The Republican Party of Virginia also extended its prayers to Kirk and his family, writing, “Political violence has no place in our country.”
