AGFC to host Osceola fishing derby, resume catfish stockings

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will resume catfish stockings at Family and Community Fishing Program ponds Saturday with a fishing derby at the new Hybar Steel Waters Fishing Pond in Osceola.The event coincides with Osceola’s 150th anniversary and marks the 50th FCFP location in the state. Hybar Steel donated the pond to the city and plans to develop 35 acres around it into a park.Activities include fishing, archery, BB gun shooting and a kids zone. The Minority Health Commission will provide free health screenings, and lunch will be served while supplies last.
Children under 16 may fish for free. Anglers 16 and older must have a valid license, available at agfc.com/licenses.
Participants are encouraged to bring fishing tackle, bait and coolers to take home their catch.





The program began as a fishing derby under former Commissioner Tommy Sproles and now serves 35 cities in 24 counties. Stockings pause during the summer and resume each fall with catfish before shifting to rainbow trout in winter.
