9/11 Reflections: Airlines to add cockpit barriers by 2026 federal deadline

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — On the 24th anniversary of 9/11, Chief Transportation Correspondent and pilot Maycay Beeler reports on a new safety feature designed to keep hijackers out of the cockpit.

Southwest Airlines has become the first U.S. carrier to install retractable “secondary barriers” on its brand-new Boeing 737 MAX jets — a gate-like device that blocks access when a cockpit door is open, such as during restroom breaks.

Other airlines, including United, American, and Alaska, are set to follow, ahead of a federal mandate requiring barriers on all new aircraft by 2026.
