A juvenile male died on Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound that he sustained after shooting and injuring two fellow students at Evergreen High School, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

The two victims were hospitalized as a result of the shooting, which was reported shortly after noon in Evergreen, a quiet mountain town roughly 30 minutes west of Denver.

Investigators are processing “multiple scenes at the school,” both inside and outside the building, Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s office spokesperson, said in a press conference. The weapon used in the shooting was a revolver, she said.

“All three (students) that were transported immediately from the school sustained gunshot wounds, and we think that that’s it,” Kelley said.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement that he was “closely monitoring” the situation and that state law enforcement officers were assisting in the response. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are also on the scene, Kelley said.

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence,” Polis said. “I, the Evergreen Community, and the entire State of Colorado are devastated by this tragedy and will keep the victims, as well as their friends and family, in our thoughts.”

The Democratic state lawmakers who represent the Evergreen area said Wednesday that they were shocked and outraged by the shooting.

“I am horrified by the shooting at Evergreen High School, and my heart breaks for the students, educators, families and school personnel whose start to the school year has now been marked by inexplicable violence and harm,” said Rep. Tammy Story of Conifer. “I am hoping for the swift recovery of the victims, and my thoughts are with them and their families.”

“I am heartbroken by the news of the shooting at Evergreen High School and angered at another senseless act of gun violence in our state,” said Sen. Lisa Cutter. “Schools need to be safe places, and this tragedy is yet another reminder that we must do better to protect our kids.”
