Trump made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY,” Trump wrote. “There can be no other option!”
He also took the opportunity to criticize former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, now a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2026, suggesting that failures in public safety under Cooper’s leadership contributed to the tragedy.
Trump’s post drew both support and criticism online. Supporters echoed his call for swift justice, while critics said his language and politicization of the case could interfere with due process.
A random, unprovoked attack
Zarutska, who moved to Charlotte three years ago to start a new life, was fatally stabbed on August 22 while riding the light rail home. Prosecutors have charged Decarlos Brown Jr. with first-degree murder and a federal count of causing death on a mass transportation system.
According to her family, Zarutska was a full-time employee at a local pizzeria and a student working to improve her English. She had texted her boyfriend before her death, saying she would be home soon.
The tragedy has sparked broader discussions about transit safety in Charlotte. In a statement, Zarutska’s family called for major reforms, including stronger security on the Blue Line and an investigation into private security contractors working with the city’s transit system.
“We are heartbroken beyond words,” said a family spokesperson. “Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way. No family should have to go through this.”
City response
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced changes to strengthen security across the Charlotte Area Transit System properties. The city plans to increase Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department presence on trains and at stations.
Brown remains in custody at the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.
Divisive debates
While many agree on the need for justice in Zarutska’s death, Trump’s comments have reignited debate over the death penalty, the role of politicians in ongoing legal cases, and how public tragedies should be handled.
Legal experts caution that public commentary by high-profile figures can complicate proceedings and put pressure on prosecutors and judges.
Zarutska’s family, while focused on justice and public safety, has also asked the public and media to refrain from sharing video footage of the incident out of respect for her dignity and their grief.
“This could have been anyone riding the light rail that night,” they said. “We are committed to making sure this never happens again.”
