As previously reported, Benson called 911 on Sunday morning, saying his roommate had cracked her head open in the shower.
When first responders arrived, they found the woman deceased in a shower with a cut to the top of her head so deep they could see her skull, and found that her eyes were black, swollen shut, and had a broken nose.
Benson was reportedly covered in blood when first responders arrived and had “fresh injuries” to his hands, according to Richfield Police.
Police said Benson’s story of his roommate getting injured in the shower did not match what they found inside the house.
Court documents state that investigators located blood outside the bathroom, including on the stairs leading to the laundry room of the house. Splattering on walls and bookshelves, and in some parts, areas where it looked like blood had tried to be cleaned up.
Court documents also state that in the basement bedroom, the victim’s 2-year-old daughter was found sleeping, with a blood splatter on her arm. More blood was found in the room.
Bloody clothes and shoes were also found in the washer.
Benson was arrested later that morning and is currently being held in the Hennepin County Jail.
