SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — On the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, will hold an annual remembrance service.

The ceremony Thursday will honor the 40 passengers and crew members who gave the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives when their plane, United Flight 93, crashed into an empty field. According to the National Park Service,

the half-hour Moment of Remembrance will start at 9:45 a.m. at the Memorial Plaza, where the names of each passenger and crew member will be read with the ringing of the ‘Bells of Remembrance.’

A wreath-laying ceremony will then take place at the Wall of Names at the plaza. The service will be held rain or shine.

You can watch the full remembrance service live in the video player above and on the free WTAJ+ streaming app starting at 9:45 a.m.

On September 11, 2001, the four coordinated terrorist attacks shocked the world. That morning at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., hijackers flew two planes into each of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York. At 9:27 a.m., a third plane struck the Pentagon in Virginia.

The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville at 10:03 a.m. as the 40 passengers and crew members revolted. On that day, 2,977 people were killed and thousands were injured, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in the world.

A new addition to the Flight 93 National Memorial museum is a sign from Newark Airport, where the plane departed that day.
