Felony charges filed against man accused of robbing USPS letter carrier in Woodlawn

CHICAGO — Felony charges have been filed against a Chicago man accused of robbing a USPS letter carrier on the city’s South Side late last year.

According to the United States Postal Inspection Service, 24-year-old Joshua Walder has been charged with one felony count of robbery, one felony count of burglary and four felony counts of theft of government property.

Investigators say the charges stem from Walder’s alleged role in the robbery of a USPS letter carrier on Nov. 14, 2024.

Authorities said the incident allegedly unfolded on that day in the 6200 block of South Evans Avenue, in Woodlawn.

According to investigators, Walder allegedly approached the letter carrier and demanded postal property under the threat of force. Walder then allegedly got inside the letter carrier’s vehicle and stole mail from inside.

Walder was eventually tracked down and arrested on Aug. 26, thanks to a joint investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Chicago police.

“This arrest is a statement that violent crime against USPS employees will not be tolerated, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Ruth Mendonça, Inspector in Charge, Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, said. “The Postal Inspection Service will continue to work alongside our law enforcement partners to collectively pursue criminals who victimize postal employees and customers.” The Postal Inspection Service appreciates the assistance of the Chicago Police Department with this investigation and arrest.”

Authorities did not provide a booking photo for Walder.
