Notably, Governor Cox says that a “person of interest” has been taken into custody. He has not confirmed the identity of the individual. He also said that law enforcement is still actively looking for any additional information regarding the shooting, but that they do believe the shooting is the act of a singular shooter.

Officials also confirmed that it appears the shot was long-range and possibly came from a rooftop.

Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University (UVU) as part of his national campus tours when a shot rang out, hitting him. President Donald Trump confirmed in a Truth Social post that Kirk had died as a result of his injuries.

Initially, Utah Valley University said that a suspect was in custody, but told students to leave the campus, if possible, or to shelter in place. Additionally, they cancelled all classes and closed the campus.

Orem Police Department first took an individual into custody, but they later cleared and released that individual, saying that he was “not an accurate person of interest.” However, that individual was booked in the Utah County Jail for obstruction of justice.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the FBI director announced that a new suspect was taken into custody.

Law enforcement is reportedly breaching a building on campus as well, according to Orem Fire Department. All roads leading up to the campus have also been shut down.

People are being asked to stay away from the campus. Additionally, OPD is going from building to building to escort people off of campus. Utah Valley University says that anyone who is still on campus should call 801-863-8130 to be escorted off campus.

Public transportation away from the area is available at Orem Central Station by the pedestrian bridge.
