Day of Remembrance: Honor 9/11 with these events around the Charlotte area

(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Thursday marks the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, and there are several events in and around Charlotte honoring the lives lost on the somber day. 

The remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001, begins early with a few events before 8 a.m., and include memorials with pieces of the wreckage from New York City.

Romare Bearden Park will again be home to a Flags of Remembrance display, which will be placed in the shape of the World Trade Center twin towers along with photo cards of each victim. Further, a reflective memorial with a WTC steel beam will consist of the tolling of a bell at prominent times of 8:46, 9:03, 9:37, 9:59, 10:03 and 10:28. It will be in place until 9 a.m. Friday. 

Cornelius

The Cornelius Fire Department will honor the lives lost on 9/11 at 7:45 a.m. The department’s Station 1 on South Main Street is home to a permanent memorial that’s made of a piece of steel from one of the World Trade Center towers. 

Dallas

Holy Communion Lutheran Church is hosting a free remembrance breakfast. Food will be provided starting at 7 a.m. and retired Navy Capt. Rich Humenuck is the guest speaker.

Salisbury

The city hosts its annual memorial service at 8:30 a.m. at the Firefighters Memorial on South Main Street. This year’s service will follow the timeline of the events of 9/11, extending over two hours to reflect key moments of the day. The public may attend for as much time as needed, with flexibility to come and go during the service. 

Waxhaw

The Town of Waxhaw holds a Patriot Day ceremony at 8 a.m. to remember those were lost and honor those that helped with the rescue and recovery efforts. It takes place at the Military Wall of Honor on North Main Street.
