The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said on Aug. 12, the Medical Examiner’s Office notified detectives about a suspicious death.
Elmer Castro, 32, of no fixed address, was brought into the hospital on Aug. 4. It was believed that he was intoxicated and hurt after a possible fall. His health declined quickly, and he died from his injuries eight days later, according to police.
Throughout FCPD’s investigation, detectives said they determined that Castro had been assaulted by Elmar Waldemar Xitumul Vasquez, 39, of Annandale on Aug. 4.
He was taken into custody on Sept. 5 and is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Police have charged him with second-degree murder.
FCPD is still conducting interviews to determine the moments that led up to the fatal assault.
